Bio

Koen Mommens is professor in the research group Mobilise – Vrije Universiteit Brussel, led by Prof. Dr. Cathy Macharis. Koen Mommens is a Master of Science in Geography at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel – Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. He currently leads the research group on Sustainable Logistics within Mobilise. In his PhD, Koen Mommens researched the impact of different cargo-types (e.g. containers, pallets, etc.) on the modal shift to rail and inland waterways. He therefore developed the LAMBTOP (GIS model) and TRABAM (agent-based model). This last model is a freight transport model for Belgium integrating both logistic service provider behavior and external cost calculations on individual vehicle level. Koen Mommens published in the most important peer-reviewed journals in his research field. He was involved in over 50 projects, for governments (including Flemish, Walloon, Brussels, EU) and large enterprises including for Colruyt, Torfs and AB Inbev.

Koen Mommens taught undergraduate and postgraduate levels (introductory days, introduction Maths, Sustainable Mobility and Logistics, Decision Support Systems for Sustainability).
