Olivier Vandenberg graduated as Medical Doctor at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Brussels, Belgium in 1996. In 2001, he completed a Master in Clinical Pathology at the same university and obtained a PhD in Biomedical Sciences in 2006. In 2008, he was appointed Head of the Department of Microbiology of the Brussels university hospitals network. In 2016, Dr Vandenberg joined the Division of Infection & Immunity, University College London (UCL) as Honorary Senior Lecturer. In addition, he is currently Professor of Microbiology in the Public Health School and in the Faculty of Medicine of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Most of his researches focus on emerging foodborne pathogens in both industrialized and developing countries. Since 2000, he has also supervised the consolidation of several microbiology laboratories allowing the implementation of infectious disease surveillance programmes in Low and Middle Incomes Countries (LMIC). These field activities led him to be member of the WHO Advisory Group on Integrated Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance (AGISAR) to support WHO’s effort to minimize the public health impact of antimicrobial resistance and the use of antibiotics in food animals. Since 2014, he has been appointed member of the new ECDC Food & Waterborne Diseases – Network Coordination Committee. Over the last 10 years, he has published more than 30 peer-reviewed papers, approximately 80% reporting research on enteric pathogens and contributed to book chapters. Finally he is member of several scientific societies including the European Society for Microbiology and Infectious Disease and the American Society for Microbiology.
