Urban Trees Workshop

Urban Trees Workshop

The Brussels Studies Institute is planning a workshop on the theme of urban trees on Wednesday 19 June on the ULB-VUB Usquare campus.
This workshop is open to anyone who is involved, active or interested in the topic of urban trees: members of associations, local and regional government staff, researchers, practitioners, etc.

Since trees play many roles in regulating the quality of the environment, they are expected to play a prominent part in helping cities adapt to climate change, particularly in public spaces, in order to reduce socio-environmental inequalities. However, the questioning of tree stock management (urban planning or architectural projects) by associations and citizens’ initiatives indicates that there is no consensus on how to develop the potential of trees in the city.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together a wide range of stakeholders to raise and discuss the issues and questions surrounding urban trees, and to identify blind spots, disagreements and areas of convergence. It is through this process that we will be able to define priorities, identify new practices and partnerships to mobilise in the field, and develop future research to support these explorations.

–              Presentation of the workshop’s three themes

  • origins through an initial reflection by the BSI academic network
  • examples in existing field projects

  2. Representations and values
  3. Management and governance
